Testing is the only way to find out the actual levels of radon inside your home, as factors such as the exact location, style of construction, and ventilation can all have an effect. So, it’s important that you work with us to help us identify those homes affected to enable us to carry out work to reduce the levels of radon within your home.
Testing for radon is completed through a monitoring kit which is placed in 2 commonly used rooms in the home (living room and main bedroom), and left in-situ for at least 3 months (the kit should not be moved during this time and must remain in-situ for the stated time period to allow for accurate results). The monitoring kit is placed and collected by an external service provider, who will arrange their visits directly with you. Following the collection of the monitoring kit, the kit is sent to a lab to be analysed. The analysis will then determine the level of radon, and if any further action is required (i.e. remediation works that will lower the level of radon in the home).
If your home has been identified as having higher levels of radon
If your home is found to have higher levels of radon, we will take steps to reduce it. Works may include improving ventilation which would therefore reduce levels of radon in the property. The 2 most common methods we use are by installing a positive input ventilation system or by creating a sump. Both of these methods work to reduce the level of radon within the property. More info can be found on the UK Radon website.
Once we know which properties are affected, we will design a programme of works to address the levels of radon in these properties and remediation methods will be implemented.
Leaseholders
If you are a leaseholder and you would like to find out more information on radon or would like to identify the level of radon in your property, please get in touch with us so we are able to direct you towards UKHSA to look into further.
When will you hear from us?
We will aim to contact all affected property occupiers as soon as possible, following receipt of the test results from the service provider. We will inform you of the test results and details of any further action that may be required (i.e. remediation works as detailed above). All properties will be contacted (via letter) if a risk has been identified or not, confirming the results found (i.e. further action required or no further action required).
