How can I challenge a Universal Credit decision?

If you disagree with a Universal Credit decision, you can ask the DWP for a mandatory reconsideration—this means they’ll review the decision.

You must normally do this within 1 month of the decision date. If you miss the deadline, you can still apply within 13 months if you have a good reason such as illness, bereavement, a hospital stay or personal crisis.

You can challenge the decision by writing a letter to the address on your decision letter, completing a CRMR1 form or by calling the number on your decision letter.

You can access support to challenge the decision from your local Citizens Advice or the Disability Advice Project in Torfaen.
