Gas leaks
If a contract holder thinks there is a gas leak in their home, provide the following advice:
- If you’re at home, and you can do it safely, turn off your gas supply. The gas mains tap should be beside your gas meter. Move the handle a quarter turn until it’s at 90 degrees from the pipe to shut off the gas supply. If you aren’t sure you can ask a neighbour or friend to help.
- Leave your home and call the 24-hour National Gas Emergency Service. Calls to this number are typically FREE but it may depend on your phone contract. Remember to never use a phone near a gas leak – move well away from the property. National Gas Emergency Number – 0800 111 999

It is important to note that for both gas leaks and CO calls that our own engineers do not attend/enter the property until the emergency service provider has attended to ensure they are not exposed to dangerous situations.
Life saving checklist:
- DO NOT smoke, light a match or use any other naked flame.
- DO NOT turn any electrical switches on or off.
- DO NOT use doorbells, mobile phones or any other electrical switches which could cause a spark.
- DO open doors and windows to allow fresh air in.
- DO turn off the gas at the mains tap, which is usually near the meter.
- DO warn your neighbours.
- DO leave your property.
Carbon monoxide (CO) – can kill but you can’t see, taste it or smell it.
- If a carbon monoxide detector makes a sound for no reason call 0800 111 999.
CO is toxic, colourless, tasteless, odourless, and non-irritant, It’s harmful to humans and animals.
What makes CO poisoning extremely dangerous is its insidious onset- and often fatal consequences. It affects mental ability and incapacitates people without them knowing anything is wrong. Any sudden exertion by an affected person may cause collapse, so that he or she cannot escape from the contaminated location. The result is often fatal.
Symptoms of CO poisoning
The effects of CO poisoning can be very much like flu. If you have any of these symptons seek urgent medical advice.
- Dizziness
- Tiredness
- Nausea
- General body weakness
- Severe headaches
- Your face can also take on a cherry red coloured appearance.
