Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP) can help provide additional help towards rent costs. You must be entitled to either Housing Benefit or Universal Credit which includes an amount for housing costs, in order to be eligible. There are no set circumstances for DHP but the applicant must be able to prove that they are in need of extra help.
DHP could be awarded if the applicant is subject to the bedroom tax, has a shortfall in their rent or if they pay water or heating rates. DHP is usually granted for short periods of timeĀ and once this expires will need to be re-applied for. If DHP is awarded it will be paid direct to Bron Afon in the housing benefit cycle.
In some circumstances, a DHP can be used to contribute towards rent arrears.
