What to do in an emergency

It’s important that customers know where their emergency gas shut off valve, water stop tap and electric fuse box are. They should also check that they are accessible and in good working order.  Provide the following advice:

Gas

  • Turn off the gas emergency control valve, usually near the meter.
  • Open all doors and windows.
  • Put out all naked flames. Do not smoke.
  • Do not turn on or off any electric light or power switches.
  • Contact the Gas Emergency Services on Freephone 0800 111 999 (only use a mobile phone from outside your home).
  • The Gas Emergency Services will attend and advise if it is Bron Afon’s responsibility. If it is, they should contact us immediately and we will send a gas engineer.
  • Do not restore the gas supply or use any appliances until they are advised that it is safe to do so by the Gas Emergency Services or Bron Afon gas engineer.

Fire

  • Ring or get someone to ring 999.
  • Do not try to put out the fire yourself. Leave the immediate area and move to a safe place.

Electricity
If you think that an electrical appliance in your home is dangerous, turn the mains switch on the fuse board to OFF. Unplug the appliance and turn the mains switch back to ON.
If you have total loss of electrical power to your home, check your fuse board first. If the switch is in the OFF position, turn it back to ON.
If you still have no power, check with your neighbours if possible and if you think there may be a power cut in your area, call the electricity supplier on Freephone 0800 052 0400.

Water

  • If you have a burst pipe or any other water leak, turn your mains stop tap off to the right, then call us on Freephone 01633 620 111.
If you have no water supply, check with your neighbours if possible and call Welsh Water on Freephone 0800 052 0130
Serious leaks from flats can affect flats below. In line with your contract or lease, when no-one is at home to allow access to investigate, we may gain entry if necessary to carry out emergency work.

Drains and toilet blockages

If your toilet appears to be blocked, it is important to check it out because wastewater can back up from the toilet or sink and flood your home. (See our how-to guides).

Check with your neighbours if possible, to find out if any blockage or flooding is affecting their home as well and follow one of the points below:

1. If the blockage is on the ground floor (such as the ground floor toilet, manhole or gulley), please call Welsh Water on Freephone 0800 085 3968 – we need confirmation of this from Welsh Water
2. If your neighbours’ homes are also affected, please call Welsh Water on Freephone 0800 0853968.
3. If the blockage is just in your home, please call us on 01633 620 111.

Dangerous trees

Trees within the boundaries of your garden are your responsibility.

Trees in the communal spaces on our land are generally our responsibility but those close to the highway can often be the responsibility of Torfaen Council. If you see a tree which has become dangerous or hazardous, please call us on 01633 620 111 or the Torfaen Council on 01495 762200 as soon as you can.
