Electrical Testing & Safety
Every five years, we need to test a property’s electrical system, (we don’t test appliances, only the fixed electrical installation), to make sure that it is safe for continued use.
We will contact our contract holders when we need to do this. We may contact some contract holders sooner than five years to allow us time to arrange access whilst ensuring our properties do not go out of compliance.
It is very important they give us access for their electric safety inspections.
Our electricians will require access to the consumer unit and as many light fittings, switches, sockets and other accessories as possible to allow us to test and inspect a representative sample of the whole installation.
The inspection may take up to 3-4 hours to complete.
Due to constant changes in regulations and standards we may identify some remedial actions on the initial visit which will require a further visit to complete. Access for this further work will be arranged in the same way as the initial inspection.
These important checks will help to keep contract holders safe.
Remember:
- Do not overload sockets – use one plug in each socket.
- Do not plug an extension lead into another extension lead.
- Keep electrical leads, plugs and appliances away from water.
- Never buy an electrical appliance without knowing it is safe to use.
- If the appliance is second-hand, always have it checked by a qualified electrician before you use it.
- Switch off and unplug electrical appliances if you are not using them, unless they are designed to be left on.
- Store electric blankets either flat or rolled to protect the electrical wiring.
- Position portable heaters against the wall; never place them along your escape route or near flammable items.
- Lights and bulbs can get very hot, be careful where you position them.
- Always use the correct fuse rating for the appliance being used.
- Be careful when using plug-in air fresheners
- Use all electrical equipment according the manufacturer’s instructions
